A Montana ranching family confronts others trespassing on their land… Forry J. Smith, who plays Lloyd, is experienced in the rodeo world. John Dutton (Kevin Costner) often seems to “forget” his Montana accent and revert to the SoCal voice he usually uses.. Featured on WatchMojo: Top 10 Summer TV Shows That Aren’t On Your Radar (2018). (Review is for the first two seasons only) I went into this show not expecting to like it, but the plot, acting and cinematography are superb. It’s basically Montana mob wars with occasional giant doses of testosterone (cowboys with guns on horses while fishing)! Costner is a masterful actor as Dutton’s lead. The show is at its best when it shows that the chessboard is moving the Duttons and their enemies are in on it. The show falters at the start of the second season, but picks up again midway through. Kelsey Asbill is the weakest link in the role of Monica and plays a bad hand badly, the plot is thrown around awkwardly and the acting just misses the mark. I think Cole Hauser as Rip might be the strongest acting (besides Costner himself) and I’ve been looking forward to all the scenes involving Rip. Thomas Rainwater is great too. The plot hums and the scenery is beautiful. Just as Cormac McCarthy’s All the Pretty Horses was a bit more raw and brutal than the title suggests, this show strikes in a similar vein. I highly recommend and wish I hadn’t waited so long to watch it.
